With more than 80 per cent of the operational management and
supervisory teams at both our sites having now received Managing
Safely certificates from the Institution of Occupational Safety
and Health (IOSH), the target now is for all operational managers
and supervisors to be IOSH qualified by April 2005.
"So far, 19 managers and supervisors at Flint and
21 at Grimsby have achieved their certificates, and we are
delighted with their success,"
said HR Director Paul Tirebuck. "We believe that this
programme, along with other actions and initiatives which
we have implemented on site, has helped us to achieve the
substantial reduction in accidents at both our factories."
The big drop in the number of accidents in the past year compared
to 2003 is very good news, but we want to make even further
progress. A 60 per cent reduction in the total number of accidents
were recorded at Flint during the year up to November 2004,
and a 46 per cent reduction at Grimsby during the same period.
In Flint there were 78 accidents compared to 194 in the previous
year, and 14 (36 per cent fewer) lost-time accidents compared
to 22.
In Grimsby there were 147 accidents compared to 273 in 2003,
and 8 (53 per cent fewer) lost-time accidents compared to
17.
A Health & Safety Review on both sites carried out by
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)
in September has helped us to focus extra attention on certain
areas such as risk assessments, safety documents, production
equipment records and accident investigations.
The report commended the positive attitude towards Health
& Safety which the RoSPA auditor found in discussions
with employees at all levels of the business.
A big thank you to all staff for their attention to Health
& Safety and especially to those who take specific roles
such as Safety Committee members, First Aiders and Fire Wardens.
